Specific Advice on Camshaft Installation

The information in this section applies to camshafts ground on blank castings, or steel billet.

Please ensure to wash off the protective oil coating applied at the Piper factory before fitting core plugs, grub screws and gas plugs.

Piper advises using a thread locking compound when fiting grub screws and gas plugs, and using a locking compound when fitting core plugs.

Austin Healey 3000.

These camshafts are supplied with a 1/8″ BSPT gas plug. After cleaning your new Piper camshaft, please fit the gas plug to the rear of the camshaft.

Austin Healey 100/4.

These camshafts are supplied with a 1/2 UNF grub screw. After cleaning your new camshaft, please fit the grub screw to the rear of the camshaft.

Austin Rover ‘K’ Series,VVC Exhaust and the Piper designed VVC single Inlet Conversion Camshaft.

These camshafts are supplied with a Bissell Pin, which should be fitted ensuring the slot is facing inwards.

BMC A+ (Metro Drive) X-Drilled Blanks.

These camshafts are supplied with a pack containg a 1/8″ BSPT gas plug and a 0° Minkey. After cleaning your new Piper camshaft, please ensure to fit the gas plug in the front of the camshaft, preferably using a thread locking compound. Please ensure to fit the supplied Minkey.

BMC MGA / MGB X-Drilled Blanks.

These camshafts are supplied with a pack containing a 8mm grub screw and a 0° Minkey. After cleaning your new Piper camshaft, please ensure to fit the grub screw to the rear of the camshaft, preferably using a thread locking compound. Please fit the supplied Minkey.

Ford BDA / BDG / BDT Blanks.

These camshafts are supplied with a 7/16-inch UNF grub screw. After cleaning your new Piper camshaft, please ensure to fit the grub screw to the rear of the camshaft, preferably using a thread locking compound.

Ford Sigma Ti-VCT Blanks.

Piper does not recommend customers install any non-standard camshafts in this engine if the engine is to continue to use the standard Ford mapped ECU. To avoid any possible engine damage, Piper strongly advises customers who are installing any performance ground camshafts in this engine, to have the ECU professionally re-mapped accordingly.

Jaguar 6 cylinder Blanks.

These camshafts are supplied with either a 3/8-inch UNF grub screw or an 8.5mm ball fitted to the front of the camshaft; please check the grub screw or ball is fitted. These camshafts are also supplied with a 3/8-inch UNF grub screw to be fitted to the rear of the camshafts if required.

Important When fitting the grub screw, it may be possible to obstruct the oil intake hole in the rear journal once full tightness has been reached. When fitting the grub screw, please use a thread locking compound and fit the grub screw flush to the end of the camshaft. After fitting, please double check no obstruction (fully or partially) to the oil intake hole has been made by the grub screw. Please allow sufficient time for the locking compound to dry before installing the camshafts.

Renault Clio 2.0 16V 172 / 182 Cup.

The exhaust camshaft is supplied with the following genuine Renault parts. 8200778847 Pulley Stud with pre applied thread locking compound. 8200793248 Pulley Nut. After cleaning your new Piper camshaft, fit the pulley stud to the front end of the exhaust camshaft. Both inlet and exhaust camshafts are supplied with a 22mm core plug. Please ensure to fit these to the rear of the camshafts.

Vauxhall / Opel / Astra / Nova 1.2 / 1.3 / 1.4 / 1.6 GTE 8v and Vauxhall / Opel / 1.6i / 1.8i / 2.0i J series 8v.

These camshafts are supplied with an 8mm ball. Please check to see if the camshaft you are replacing has a ball fitted; if so, please fit the supplied ball to your new Piper camshaft.

Vauxhall / Opel / Astra / Cavalier / Calibra 16v 20XE.

The inlet camshaft and short exhaust camshaft will have an 8mm ball fitted to the rear; please ensure this has been fitted. The conventional standard long exhaust camshaft will be supplied with an 8mm ball; please check the exhaust camshaft you are replacing. If this has a ball fitted, please fit the supplied ball to your new Piper camshaft.
